In the past few years, ABB and other automation system suppliers have begun to reduce these serial interdependencies. Firstly, by developing fieldbuses and wireless instrument networks, these advancements in digital communication technology have effectively eliminated the need for traditional I/O hardware and improved system flexibility. Any new measurement points or outputs added to the project must be digitally mapped to a broader control system strategy, but this can be done later in the project through software - a method that is less disruptive than redesigning, reordering, and/or reinstalling multiple new hardware components
