Although these innovative methods can eliminate traditional I/O engineering dependencies, old habits are difficult to change. In fact, recent surveys on control readers have shown that analog instruments still account for 55% of capital project I/O points, while 38% are connected through fieldbus and 7% are connected wirelessly (Figure 1). Obviously, the process industry still appreciates the simplicity and familiarity of analog instruments. Therefore, a third innovation is needed to enable project engineers to break free from the rigid authoritarianism of fixed functional I/O modules: single channel, flexible I/O, such as the selective I/O service provided by the Brazilian Broadcasting Agency. Can be used for process automation and security applications, this flexible I/O solution that extends to the system 800XA series allows each I/O channel to be described separately using plug-in hardware modules. This method simplifies project execution in multiple ways.
